World War II - The Rural Homefront

Objectives for Students - To identify the impact of World War II on the local area.

Placement in Curriculum/Subject Areas - History and Social Studies.

Organization of Classes - History and Social Studies.

Radio Activity - After hearing the radio program, have students discuss and interpret the experiences of those who participated in the home-front effort. Consider the role of women, farmers, local industries, youth, and schoolchildren in production efforts.

Interview Activity -  Assign students to interview members of their families, neighbors, and communities for additional accounts of home-front efforts and military service.

Additional Activities - There are numerous books and web sites that feature the World War II experiences of Americans. Have student write or deliver an oral report on a war-related topic of their interest.

Assessment of Student Performance - Teacher judgement of classroom participation.
