| Objectives for
Students - To interpret the stories of school consolidation efforts. Placement in Curriculum/Subject Areas - History, Social Studies, and creative Writing. Organization of Classes - small groups, individual, whole class Materials Needed - Archival materials, CTM pages at www.frognet.net/countdown Radio Activity - After hearing the radio program, what social and structural changes occurred in rural schools? What economic and social factors influenced these changes? In what ways? How has the motivation for consolidation changed over the years and why? Debate the plusses and minuses of school consolidation from several perspectives. [teachers, students, administrators, parents, general community, business community, taxpayers] Interview Activity - Have students investigate the history of the consolidation process of the nearest consolidated school. Search documents, newspapers, interview citizens. Additional Activities - It's been said, "When the school leaves a town; the town dies." Agree or disagree in debate or essay form. Position yourself as students in a school under consideration for consolidation. Create a page from a personal journal. Research the school funding issues in the state of Ohio. What's the dynamics behind the scenes? Are all schools in Ohio equally funded? Why or why not? What problems are there in insuring that all children in the state receive high quality education? Brainstorm solutions. Interviews with teachers and principal in the school, newspapers, Assessment of Student Performance - Teacher judgement of classroom participation. |
