Lesson Plan #2

Radio Program # 2
Ethnic Mix

Objectives for Students - To examine patterns of migration into the area.

Placement in Curriculum/Subject Areas - Social Studies, History, and Geography.

Organization of Classes - Individual or small group for map activity and interviews. Individual for family histories. Whole class and small groups for discussion

Materials Needed - Maps of Europe, Appalachia, Ohio or particular states.

Radio Activity -  On a map of Europe, identify the countries of immigrant origin mentioned in the radio program. [England, Wales, Scotland, Russia, Slovakia, Poland, and Hungary] What conditions and events in Europe prompted immigration to the United States? Observe the similarities and differences between the southeast Ohio area and countries of origin on topographical maps. What does your comparison suggest?

Interview Activity - Interview members of your family to determine your ancestral roots. Use a large classroom map to label the patterns of migration to your community. When did they come?   What was their source of employment - were they farmers, miners, housemaids?

Additional Activities - Visit the Ellis Island web site to see what the entrance process to the United States was like.

We've provided little information about the experiences of African Americans in the coal mining industry. Locate the descendants of slaves in your area. Record the family histories. How are the stories different than European migration and work experiences?

Investigate the outbreak of World War I and the Irish Potato Famine. How did these factors influence migration?

Assessment of Student Performance - Teacher judgment of classroom participation.
