Company Towns

Objectives for Students - To learn the characteristics of company towns, to locate former company towns on the map, and to analyze the perspectives of residents of company towns.

Placement in Curriculum/Subject Areas - History and Geography. May be incorporated into the study of economics and management/labor issues. Creative writing.

Organization of Classes - Individuals or teams for interviews of community members. Individuals or teams for map skills and interviews

Materials Needed - Regional map, Ohio map, or maps of particular states.

Radio Activity -  Have students look for the towns listed in the radio series on an Ohio map. [Sugar Creek, Jobs, San Toy, Utley, Millfield, Jacksonville, Glouster, Trimble, Haydenville, Chauncey, Doanville, East Liverpool, Congo, and New Pittsburgh]. Can they be located? Identify towns in your local area that were company towns. Label these towns on the classroom map. What factors contribute to the start-up of a company town? What industries were associated with these towns? Do the towns still exist? If not, what happened?

Class discussion of what was life like in a company town? Debate the advantages and disadvantages of living in a company town.

Interview Activity - Have students interview older family members or friends who may have lived in company towns. Share their stories through discussions or archives of video/audio-tapes.

NOTE: There is not a lot of documentation on this topic. The information the students collect from people's memories could be very useful in creating a map of your school district or county.

Additional Activities
-  Creative Writing Assignment - Have students create a journal page of "one day in the life of resident in a company town." [Teachers might suggest occupations and family situations for variety of responses] Points to include: daily work routine, family time, entertainment, shopping day, etc. Post stories or exchange them to stimulate discussion.

Do company towns exist today? Investigate some of the "sweatshop" locations in the U.S. and abroad. Compare and contrast these factory-dominated places with company towns.

Assessment of Student Performance - Teacher judgment of classroom participation. Journal or map activity may be graded.
