Placement in Curriculum/Subject Areas - History, Civics, and Social Studies.

Organization of Classes - History, Civics, and Social Studies.

Materials Needed - Countdown To Millennium oral histories. See the Oral History Archives on our website at www.frognet.net/countdown

Radio Activity -  Discuss what it was like to be the child or grandchild of a moonshiner. Suggest ways that the experience influenced the lives of the interviewees. What factors contributed to the start-up of the moonshine industry?

Interview Activity - Through interviews, investigate the activities of moonshiners in your family or community. Compare these experiences to those that you heard on the radio program. What insights have you gained in the areas of economics, social relations, morality, and legislative processes?

Additional Activities - Research the background on Prohibition in textbooks, web sites, and other sources. Review or introduce the process of amending the United States Constitution. What was the Prohibition movement trying to achieve? Prohibition was repealed by the 21st amendment. What influenced this legislative move?

Research and compare the moonshine industry with the drug industries of current times: large-scale cocaine traffickers, pharmaceutical companies, cigarette manufacturers, alcoholic beverage producers, and small-time marijuana growers. Create a chart for purposes of comparison. Examine the effects of government legislation, health research, and public opinion on these industries.

Assessment of Student Performance - Teacher judgment of classroom participation.
