Objectives for
Students - To interpret the experience of the Millfield Mine Disaster. Placement in Curriculum/Subject Areas - History and Social Studies. Organization of Classes - small group Materials Needed - newspapers Radio Activity - After hearing the radio program, discuss and interpret the experiences of the storytellers. Debate whether the non-union status of Mine #6 was a factor. What purpose did canaries serve in the mines and are they used today? How reliable is the "canary test" for the safety of the miners? How could the mine disaster been prevented? Interview Activity - Interview community members who have worked in the mining industry. Additional Activities - Review archives of newspapers and magazines of the time. How is their version different from the oral histories that you have heard? Compare and contrast the Millfield mine disaster to other industrial accidents such as Chernobyl, Bhopal, Three Mile Island, Exxon Valdez, etc. Assessment of Student Performance - Teacher judgment of classroom participation. |
