Beth Novak
Assistant Professor

Areas of Expertise

  • User Interface Design
  • History and Production of Digital Media
  • Nontraditional Storytelling

Beth Novak’s love of special effects began at a young age when her parents took her to a matinee of E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial. An eye for design and an affinity for technology sidelined the love of effects and lead to a career in graphic design. After stints as an interface designer with the Chicago Tribune, the Detroit Free Press, and America Online, Beth returned to school to earn an MFA in Design. It was in graduate school while working at the Advanced Computing Center for Art and Design that Beth rediscovered her love of visual effects.

Beth has been at Ohio University since 2003, and in that time she has taught classes in areas such as the history of special effects, digital game production, computer animation, and media and the Web. Her creative work has ranged from digital game interface design for children to broadcast graphics for film. Beth also serves as the faculty advisor to OU’s chapter of SIGGRAPH.

When not in the classroom or her office, Beth can be found trying to translate her toddler son’s incomprehensible, but quite intelligent, ramblings. She was awarded the 2005 TIGAR(Technology Industry Gurus of the Appalachian Region) Award for Outstanding Educator Advancing Information Technology.
