At
a time in the Cold War when member nations of UNESCO were arguing
over a New World Information and Communications Order, Don Flournoy
undertook the initial studies that became a longitudinal research
project focusing on the content, infrastructure and major players
in UNESCO-sponsored regional satellite news exchanges in Europe
(Eurovision), Asia (Asiavision), the Caribbean (Caribvision) and
the former Soviet Union (OIRT). The first publication in this
series was produced in 1984. Later, news flow research became
a major activity of the ITS. For example:

In 1987, Robert K. Stewart, Scripps School of Journalism, and
Don Flournoy started building at Ohio University a video archive
and program of scientific research and analysis on CNN World
Report, the world's first international newscast and global
news exchange. This work was funded by grants from the Ohio
University Research Committee, the Bush Research Center and
CNN. Over 20 years, the NWICO and the CNN Archive research produced
more than a dozen papers and presentations, eight published
articles, three chapters and two books.
- A
chapter entitled “Competition, Coverage and Credibility:
The CNN International News Standard," in GLOBAL NEWS: PERSPECTIVES
ON THE INFORMATION AGE, Tony Silvia, ed., was published by Iowa
State University Press, 2001. This piece of research and analysis,
that captured the Chapter No.1 position in the Silvia book,
was originally written for the 20th anniversary of CNN. CNN
management used the piece for orientation and training of new
domestic and international personnel.
- A
1997 book by Don Flournoy and Robert K. Stewart (CNN: MAKING
NEWS IN THE GLOBAL MARKET, London: John Libbey & Co., Ltd.)
included a foreword written by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter.
A Web site <http://its.ohiou.edu/cnnbook>
that accompanied the book hosted pictures of Carter, Ted Turner,
Jerry Levin, Peter Arnett, Christiane Amanpour and others. This
was the first book in print focusing on CNN International. The
book has gone through several reprints and there is now a Japanese
edition published by NTT-Japan.
- “The
Business of International News: Putting a Brand Name on Information,”
was a public address given by ITS director Don Flournoy as Visiting
Scholar, University of Rhode Island, February 1998. Christiane
Amanpour (CNN), Corry Flintoff (NPR) and Larry Grossman (NBC/PBS)
were among the other notables in this lecture series.
- “CNN
World Report: A Five Year Analysis,” (with graduate students
Ece Algan and Sang-Chul Lee), an Institute for Telecommunications
Studies Monograph, Ohio University, Athens, 1997, was also a
paper presented to the International Association for Mass Communication
Research (IAMCR) conference, Oaxaca, Mexico, July 1997.

in 1994. When the book was no longer in print, CNN asked for
permission to post the full text on www.cnn.com under World
Report, where it remained for several years.

in the conference proceedings and the full paper was published

Don Flournoy also presented a paper entitled “Innovation
and Obsolescence: The Sword of Advancing Technologies That Cuts
Two Ways.” These were published by MIT online.

CONTENT ANALYSIS OF INDONESIAN NEWSPAPERS, Yogyakarta: Gadjah
Mada University Press, 1992. This is a Don Flournoy edited book
with a preface by Distinguished Professor Dr. Guido Stempel,
Ohio University. The book first appeared in the Indonesian language
as ANALISA ISI SURATKABAR SURATKABAR INDONESIA, Yogyakarta:
Gadjah Mada University Press, 1989. The book has chapters by
six of Indonesia’s top journalists, including the former
Director General of Radio/TV/Film, the former Director of TVRI
State Television and the current editor of Republika, Jakarta’s
third largest newspaper.
- "Media
Images of Canada: U.S. Media Coverage of Canadian Issues and
U.S. Awareness of Those Issues" by Guido Stempel and Don
Flournoy was published by OHIO JOURNALISM MONOGRAPHS, Bush Research
Center, E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, Ohio University,
August 1992. This research was commissioned and funded by the
Canadian Consulate to examine coverage of Canada in the U.S.
press and on television during 1991-1993. Data collection, analysis
and reporting on findings of the study resulted in several articles
and papers in addition to this widely distributed monograph.

Media Coverage of Canada and U.S. Public Awareness of Canadian
Issues” by Don Flournoy, Debra Mason, Robert Nanney and
Guido Stempel was an invited presentation at the convention
of the Association for Canadian Studies in the United States,

Memo: A Global News Commentary" by Don Flournoy appeared
in BROADCASTING, November 20, 1989. The weekly BROADCASTING
was the largest circulation magazine serving the media industry
at the time.

basis of this article, Ted Turner invited Don Flournoy to attend
his annual meetings with international affiliates (and other
