Students Win Honorable Mention in Game Career Guide Design Challenge

Ohio University Sophomores Jay Chaffin and Evan Glover, from MDIA 256 Digital Game Design, have both won Honorable Mentions in Game Career Guide’s latest Design Challenge. This particular design challenge was for the contestants to adapt a piece of literature into a video game.

Chaffin based his game off of the Victor Hugo's classic Notre Dame de Paris (Hunchback of Notre Dame). Chaffin’s game stays true to the original piece of literature. In his entry, Chaffin described the plot of his game as “The Archdeacon of Notre Dame, Claude Frollo, develops a maddening lust for Esmeralda and sends Quasimodo, his adoptive son, to kidnap the girl. This sets in motion the chain of events that lead to a city-wide witch hunt for Esmeralda and the downfall of almost every major character.”

Glover chose The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks as the inspiration of his game. Glover describes the game in his entry as being “a real-time simulation game which places players in command of a group of survivors at the beginning of a zombie outbreak with one concrete objective: survive.”

The challenge encouraged the contestants to create the game based upon any form of literature. Game Career Guide also challenged the contestants to take into consideration how a video game creator adapts a piece of literature from a book into another form of medium.
