Undergraduate Requirements

There are four sets of requirements that must be completed in order to receive a Bachelor of Science in Communication degree in Media Arts and Studies:

Media Arts General

  1. Arts and Humanities
    Eight hours at the 300- to 400-level (or 200-level or above for language courses). Courses include junior composition, art, art history, classical languages, comparative arts, dance, english, film, humanities, modern languages, music, philosophy, and theater.
  2. Social Sciences
    Eight hours at the 300- to 400-level. Courses may be chosen from anthropology, classical archaeology, economics, history, international studies, management, marketing, political science, psychology, and sociology.
  3. Communication Sciences
    Eight hours at the 300- to 400-level (or 200-level or above language courses). Courses may be chosen from classical languages, computer science, information telecommunication systems, hearing an speech sciences, communication studies, journalism, linguistics, modern languages, and visual communication.

University Tier

University General Education Tier II, African American Studies, and University Professor courses can be used to fulfill general requirements. You must fulfill the Tier III requirement also.

Media Arts and Studies Core

The following courses comprise the core required courses for all majors:

  • MDIA (TCOM) 101: A Mediated World (2 credit hours)
  • MDIA 203: The Creative Process (4 credit hours)
  • MDIA 204: The Business of Media (4 credit hours)
  • MDIA 205: Media Analysis and Criticism (4 credit hours)
  • MDIA 367: World Media (4 credit hours)

Students must successfully complete MDIA 101, 203, 204, and 205 with a "C" or better.

Corollary

Each student in the School of Media Arts and Studies is required to complete a Corollary of coursework. These are courses outside the School Media Arts and Studies designed by you and your advisor to enhance your area of interest. The corollary totals a minimum of 32 credit hours (20 at the 300- to 400-level), from no more than 2 areas.

Of special note is the required Minor in Music for students pursuing the Music Production track in the Audio Production Sequence. The Music minor will count towards part of the corollary in this track.

Additionally, those students in the Management Sequence are required to focus their corollary in business and/or organizational communication with additional required courses: ACCT 101, ECON 103 and 104, and MGT 202 or MKT 202.

Other Requirements and Standards

No course selected to fulfill any requirement may be taken on a pass/fail basis by a Media Arts and Studies major.
